Sony Nexus X prototype leaks with Google branding and on-screen buttons


Hey-ho, whaddaya know! The rumor that a number of Nexus phones might be appearing from each manufacturer for the 5th anniversary of Android, might have legs, after all. 

After the LG Nexus 4, which already got previewed completely in a prototype form, we had rumors for anHTC Nexus X, a Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2, and now for the first time we are seeing a claimed Sony Nexus Xpicture leaking out on Picasa.

At least the claims are that this is a Sony Nexus device, which, as every rumor goes, should be taken with a grain of sodium chloride. The back says Google indeed, though it might be an elaborate render, yet we are keeping our hopes high to learn more about such a device soon. 

The way this new Nexus program seems set, this could very well be a rebranded Xperia T with stock Android, just like the LG Nexus 4 appears to be a reworked Optimus G.

New Quaddy from Sony........................

Sony doubles down on hardware but manages to lighten things up with the presumed Tablet S successor.

Sony has been quietly readying a new Android-powered tablet that should supplant the company'sTablet S. According to a host of leaked images, the new tablet will feature Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core processor and come with three storage options.

Bearing the distinctive folded magazine wedge design, the Xperia tablet is an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device with a 9.4-inch display. Other specifications include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1-megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a 6,000mAh battery. Pricing, although unconfirmed, should start at $449 for the 16GB model and go as high as $649 for the 64GB version.
Not only will this new tablet be more powerful than its predecessor, but also it's 42 percent thinner and lighter. We also can see from one of the leaked pictures that the Xperia tablet offers a splashproof aluminum body.

It's not just nice touches on the outside, either; Sony has designed the device to accept multiple user profiles. Ideally, this would be good for those times when you hand the tablet over to your children or a friend. Indeed, Sony has made sure to integrate its line of services, which includesPlayStation, Music Unlimited, and Video Unlimited.
Additional details found among the slides include a variety of accessories such as a keyboard cover, a docking stand, a dock speaker, a tablet stand and a carrying case. You'll want to have plenty of extra money set aside as prices can fetch as much as $119 for the dock speaker.
A source close to Xperia Blog advises that Sony has penciled the tablet in for September, which means we could see something at IFA later this month.

Sony Xperia LT30p images leaked ahead of announcement
A new device from Sony’s stable has been leaked before its actual unveiling at IFA Berlin 2012.
Also known as the Mint, the new Sony device seems to have spent some time with the good people at Mobile Review, ahead of its launch. The site has not only revealed the specifications of the device, but also quite a few images of its form factor and custom UI running on top of Google Android 4.0 ICS.
In terms of power under the hood, the Sony LT30p “Mint” features a 4.3-inch display with a 720p resolution, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, microSD expandable storage, microSIM slot and NFC. One of the most impressive features of the device is that it features a 720p front-facing camera and a monstrous 13MP 1080p rear-facing camera. The website, Mobile Review, claims the screen which is actually 4.3-inches looks a lot bigger when placed next to a Samsung Galaxy S III.
In Its form factor, the device is expected to be thinner than the Sony Xperia S.

Going the vanilla ICS way, the device has eliminated the need for physical buttons under the display and now functions such as back, home; menu and multitasking can be taken care of from the touchscreen itself. The only physical buttons on the device are the power button, volume rocker and camera shutter button.

No pricing or availability has been revealed, but we can expect the device to be officially unveiled at IFA Berlin 2012.
If the device is aimed at the high-end market, it will compete with the likes of the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S III, Both of which have been available in the market for quite some time now. Better late than never, we hope the “Mint” has some tricks up its sleeves to take on the competition.

Sony Xperia Go available in India at Rs. 18,799
Sony's recently announced Xperia Go smartphone is now available in India via online shopping stores such as Flipkart and Infibeam. The Sony Xperia Go has been priced at Rs. 18,999 at Flipkart, while Infibeam is offering the device at Rs. 18,799. Sony, however, has not officially announced the launch of the device in India yet.
The Sony Xperia Go was introduced along with the Xperia Acro S in May this year. Touted as the rugged and waterproof smartphone, the Xperia Go runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor. It has 3.5-inch touch display with HVGA 480 x 320 pixels resolution.
The Xperia Go has 512 MB of RAM and comes with 8GB of built-in storage (with only 4GB user-accessible) and microSD card support for up to 32GB storage. For camera buffs, the device has a 5MP camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recording. Other display features include scratch resistance, dust and water resistance, gesture input and Mobile Bravia Engine.
The Xperia Go comes pre-loaded with Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited from Sony, which offers you access to Hollywood blockbusters, TV series and various music tracks. The Sony Xperia Go is available in three colours – black, white and yellow. Check out the full specifications of the device here.
With the launch of Xperia Go, Sony has strengthened its position in sub-20k Android smartphones segment. Sony recently launched Xperia Sola at Rs. 19,999. The Xperia Sola features 1GHz dual-core NovaThor U8500 processor, 512MB of RAM, a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recording, and 8GB of built-in storage.
Last month, Sony had introduced an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based smartphone called Xperia Miro. Featuring a 3.5-inch touchscreen and 5MP camera, the Xperia Miro is said to have deeper Facebook integration.

For deep-pocketed recreational divers everywhere (now) Sony debuts its first rugged Handycam, the HDR-GW77V.

 

               

Feeling let down by the MP4 video quality of your waterproof pocket video camera? Probably not, but if you are, Sony's got you covered with the newish Handycam HDR-GW77V.


Announced for Japan in May, the GW77V is headed for the U.S. in June, bringing with it all of its powerful Handycam features (this is no Bloggie Sport!) and ridiculously high price of $700.
Waterproof down to 16 feet as well as dustproof and shockproof from up to about 5 feet, the camcorder features a Sony 1/3.91-inch-type Exmor R backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and Bionz image processor that can capture AVCHD video at 1080/60p (or 60i) as well as 20-megapixel photos.
One feature that definitely sets it apart from smaller pocket video cameras, such as Sony's Bloggie line, is its 10x zoom Sony G lens that starts at a relatively wide-angle 29.8mm focal length for photos and video. And there's a built-in flash right above the lens to help out when that BSI CMOS sensor isn't cutting it in low-light conditions.
A GPS receiver is built in, too, letting you view your current location on the LCD map display, automatically geotag your shooting locations, and view the geotagged content using a Map Index function on the camcorder.
The minicamcorder has 16GB of internal storage and can also record movies and photos directly to Memory Stick Micro (M2) and microSD/SDHC cards. There is a Micro-HDMI port for connecting to a display and a Micro-USB port for charging and connecting to a computer.
Compatible with Windows and Mac, Mac users can transfer AVCHD clips and edit them in HD quality using iMovie software, but not in 1080/60p and you'll need Mac OS X v10.6.7 or later. Windows users get Sony's PlayMemories Home embedded on the device, which lets you view, edit, organize, and upload to sharing sites including Sony's own PlayMemories Online cloud sync service.

Sony has finally gotten around to developing a pocketable large-sensor camera with a presumably high-quality Zeiss T* lens.
Given that Sony produces some excellent sensors and great compact cameras, it's a bit surprising that the company's waited so long to unveil an advanced compact -- at this point, the only company that doesn't have one is Pentax (unless you count it as Ricoh). So Sony's jumping into the market late, but bound to make a splash, with its new Cyber-shot DSC-RX100.
It seems like a very well-designed camera that I'm looking forward to testing. However, despite sounding great on its face the way Sony bills it -- 1-inch sensor! 20 megapixels! F1.8 lens! 1.22-megapixel LCD! 10fps burst! -- there are quite a few caveats that should temper your excitement.
Yes, it's a moderately large sensor. Here's a relative size comparison:

For what it's worth, Sony claims that this camera will deliver the highest-quality photos ever for the Cyber-shot line. But while the the sensor is largish, it's also crammed with a lot more pixels than all of its competitors. So, for example, while has 55 percent less area than the G1 X it also has about 56 percent more pixels. It's the same sensor size as Nikon's interchangeable-lens CX mount, which some people consider too small for its class despite a lower resolution, and the Nikon 1 J1 costs the same as the RX100. While Sony does have a good track record with its high-resolution sensors, I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude about this.
As for the lens, it certainly looks like one of Sony's higher quality lenses; my experience with the Zeiss T*-coated lenses from the company's higher-end camcorders is that they're significantly better than the cheaper ones. But while the maximum aperture starts at f1.8, it reaches f4.9 by the time you reach the not-terribly-long maximum focal length of 100mm. (It may also matter to some people that its minimum aperture only goes to f11, though that's not uncommon.) Sony claims that it doesn't stop down immediately with the first zoom step -- one of the biggest problems with the G1 X -- but that's still pretty narrow and starts to make you wonder: which is more important, sensor size or lens quality, and at what point do you reach the trade-off?
Then there's the LCD. It's a relatively large, high-resolution display. But it's not 1.23 megapixels as you'll probably see stated in many places. To be fair, Sony doesn't lie about this: the company clearly states that it's a VGA-resolution LCD with a third set of white pixels for added brightness in bright sunlight. That's definitely a plus in my book.
And while the camera can shoot 10fps, that's in a mode which fixes exposure after the first frame; more traditional continuous shooting runs at a more sedate 2.5fps.
All that said, I really do like the design of the camera. It's an all-aluminum body about the same size as the S100, and incorporates a similar control ring on the lens for context-sensitive adjustments to commonly used settings. It's got a tiltable flash like that on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 and others, which makes it very easily to get better flash results. That's very important, because the camera lacks a hot shoe. The interface looks a lot more like the Alpha SLT UI than any of the point-and-shoots, which makes sense given that Sony's targeting dSLR users looking for a compact second camera -- there's a bit of display consistency.The RX100 isn't slated to ship until July. In the interim, you can see what the competition has to offer.

When Tudor Brown stepped down as president of ARM Holdings earlier this month, he left behind one of Britain's and indeed the world's, most successful technology companies.

The designs it produces have been licensed and used to build processors at the heart of many of today's bestselling gadgets.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets, Amazon's Kindle e-readers, Nintendo's 3DS hand-held games consoles and Canon's cameras are just some some of the products to use its chip architecture.

October's release of an ARM-compatible Windows system and new super-low powered microprocessors point to further growth.

But looking back, Mr Brown is first to admit that his time at ARM was not all rosy.

"All of ARM's early products failed commercially," he tells the BBC.

"There's a long list of them: the Acorn machine, the Apple Newton, the 3DO multi-player - the world's first CD-based games console - there were a whole bunch of things like that."
From Archimedes to Apple
Mr Brown's involvement with ARM predates its existence to 1983 when he was employed as an engineer at Acorn Computers. The firm was riding high off the launch of the BBC Micro and had asked him to help evaluate processors from Intel and Motorola for follow-up products.

He recommended it develop its own RISC-based processors - what were to become the first ARM (Acorn RISC Machines) chips.

But the project was hamstrung by the fact it took four years to develop the computer that ran them, the Acorn Archimedes.

"By that time Acorn wasn't able to aim at industry because the PC was getting a foothold, so it was forced into the education market again," Mr Brown says.

"It just wasn't big enough to sustain Acorn as a company, which is why it kept on going bust."

Mr Brown says it was around this time Apple first started showing interest in the ARM technology. The US firm initially rejected it because it viewed Acorn as a competitor.

But after an aborted effort to use a product from the telecoms firm AT&T, it returned in 1990 seeking help to build the Newton, the world's first PDA (personal digital assistant).

The two companies agreed to create a joint venture - ARM Holdings - but once again success proved elusive.

"Newton launched in 1992 and it was another commercial flop," says Mr Brown.

"It was way ahead of its time, it was too big, it was too slow, its handwriting technology didn't work. The sort of vision of what it was supposed to be was remarkably close to what the iPhone is today... but the technology wasn't fast enough for the time."

Mr Brown notes that the device may have failed, but the cash Apple later made from selling its shares in the firm proved useful.

"[It] sort of rescued Apple financially, and a few years later Apple started using ARM technology in the iPod, and eventually that same technology got transferred into the iPhone and iPad."

ARM itself was also shaped by the failed project in ways that would serve it well later: a focus on low-power usage which forced it engineers to aim for a "simplicity and elegance" of design.

Its fortunes turned when designs based on those principles were used by Texas Instruments to build chips powering Nokia's GSM phones.

Their popularity helped propel ARM to a successful stock market flotation in 1998, linking its fortunes to those of the mobile industry. But it always had wider ambitions.

"If you look at our marketing material right back to the IPO days we were saying that ARM technology is applicable to a wide range of products - TVs, disk drives and cars," says Mr Brown.
Internet of things
Those products may have accounted for a smaller proportion of ARM's business than expected, but the firm now believes that much of its future growth will come from microprocessors based on its new super-energy "Flycatcher" designs.

These are targeted at connecting things like fridges, medical equipment and energy meters to the net.

"The internet of things will start to see appreciable volumes in about 2015," says Mr Brown.

"It's starting to get there because ARM technology is getting so small and so cheap at the bottom end of the scale.

"A few months ago we brought out our smallest ever product, the Cortex-M0+.

"I did a quick sum on the numbers being presented and it told me it could run at a reasonable speed for 20 years on a single AA battery. That enables a whole bunch of things that wouldn't otherwise be possible."
Avoiding factories
There is an obvious temptation for ARM to want to make such devices rather than rely on royalty and licence fees, but Mr Brown says it would be wise to resist.

"It's often discussed, but dismissed in the same vein fairly quickly," he says.

"I've always said it's not the technology that's driving this company forward, it's the business model that's put ARM where it is today.

He adds that he thinks Britain's days as a "strong" manufacturer are behind it, but admits the picture becomes more complicated when it comes to trying to map ARM's success to the wider economy.

"There is manufacturing in this country, but the psyche of the British people with its chaos and flair means we are quite good at inventing things but not so good at doing things repetitively," he says.

"If I look at wealth creation, then the UK should be doing the kind of things we're doing - the high-end high-value stuff.

"But if I look at employment, it's a rather more difficult story, because obviously a company as successful as ARM only employs about 1,000 people in this country."
'Patent bubble'
As a business that does not physically produce any goods, ARM relies on its intellectual property rights. But Mr Brown sounds dismayed by the rising number of patent lawsuits and portfolio sales.

"There's no question right now we are living through a patent bubble and the valuations that are being paid for these patent portfolios don't really bear sense," he says.

"It doesn't seem sort of fair and it's hurting people.

"ARM has spent hundreds of millions of dollars developing technology, and we should be able to protect it... so in that sense patents are essential and sometimes you have to fight in court.

"But that's quite different from some of the perceived values of these portfolios being sold around."

Some analysts have suggested that ARM's rich patent portfolio could make ultimately make it a takeover target.

After Hewlett Packard's acquisition of another UK tech giant, software firm Autonomy, last year there has been speculation that the chip designer could be bought by one of its clients.

But as he walks away from the firm, Mr Brown says he is hopeful it will remain independent.

"ARM is a completely unusual company, it relies on being at the hub of this complex ecosystem that we've built," he says.

"We'll happily license any company our technology for a few million dollars while it would cost them several billion dollars to buy us. We can't really see the industrial logic of why anyone would want to buy us.

"But you can never say never, some wild things can happen."

Like its more mundane, desk-bound counterparts, it's capable of doing more than merely playing games -- a fact that Sony has capitalized on by creating a number of uses for the system. Here's a look at what the system is capable of as a part of your home entertainment setup.

1. Play Blu-ray movies.
This is still one of the biggest selling points for the console. The PS3's even been updated to support playback of Blu-ray 3D movies.

2. Play DVDs, too.
The PS3 is billed as an HD device, but that doesn't mean Sony forgot about the millions of people with large DVD collections. The system not only plays them all, but converts them to HD resolution as well.

3. Watch your video files.
PlayStation 3 has built-in support for most popular video formats, including MPEG, DivX and Xvid. Files in these formats can be played from its hard disk, USB flash drive and hard drive and from any computers connected to it via your home network.

The PS3's video editor feature lets you edit videos stored on its internal hard drive, adding text and transitions. The finished products can be easily uploaded to Facebook and YouTube.

5. Watch Netflix, Vudu, Hulu Plus, and more.
Like the Xbox 360, the PS3 can stream video content from popular services like Netflix and Hulu Plus (with subscription). Sony's console also supports Vudu, an alternative option featuring full-length movies and TV episodes for rent and sale.

6. Catch live sports.
The MLB.tv app for PS3 lets you watch live Major League Baseball games on the console, if you subscribe to the service. Recently, DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket programming was also made available to PS3 users.

There are multiple ways to view your photos on the PS3, from a slide show in Photo Gallery to a more elaborate 3D presentation, courtesy of the newer PlayMemories app.
8. Access a virtual world. PlayStation Home is a living, breathing world operated by Sony and designed for PS3 users. Within it, you can interact with other PS3 users, watch movies, own real estate and, of course, play games with your customizable avatar.

9. Use Facebook, Twitter, and more.
Using the PS3's web browser, you can access a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. The system also has built-in Facebook features, such as posting updates to your wall when you unlock trophies and other in-game accomplishments.
