Google Automated Car

Google has announced in its blog that "Google" cars with completely automatic pilot were ready. These are actually modified Toyota Prius and Audi TT.
Although Google has gone to great lengths to ensure its safety, this has not prevented experts from questioning its road safety. An onboard computer will continuously check the system operation and local police will be informed about the presence of Google car. Google wants to help reduce road accidents and carbon emissions by radically changing car usage.
Google has also stressed that their automated cars would free up time for busy individuals. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimated that people spend on average 52 minutes per day for driving a car. They can now read, make call, or watching television while the car does the driving.
Google uses an artificial intelligence system for its revolutionary cars, the cars are equipped with a type of electronic brain which can react to the dynamic environment.
The car has been tested and can run without flaw from Google’s headquarters in Mountain View to the Hollywood Boulevard. It is equipped with video cameras and touch sensors that gauge constantly what is happening around the vehicle. Although the car is fully automated, the driver is still expected to be alert while sitting behind the wheel and take control of the car immediately if necessary.
This is how it works
  • The car is equipped with sensors that scan the environment within a radius of 61 meters. A precise 3D imaging is generated.
  • A camera is placed under the rear view mirror. It identifies traffic lights and obstacles.
  • A sensor is placed on wheels to accurately capture car movements and refine its position.
  • Three radars are located on the front bumper to detect the distance to other cars or obstacles.
At the same time, it is connected with Google's servers, which allow the car to use the mapping services. Seven test vehicles has traveled for about 1,000 miles (1600 km) and only need occasional help from a human operator. So far, there is a single accident occurred when a Google car was rammed from behind during a stop at a traffic light.
The project is still at an experimental stage and it seems that Google car would be viable in a decade
